The Theatre Program's practical branch of the English, Theatre, Film & Media Department at the University of Manitoba stages three full mainstage shows and five smaller scale shows (known as Lunch B.H.A.G.G.s) every school year. The productions allow faculty, students and others to work, both onstage and backstage, on full-scale productions.
Students from all levels of the theatre program act, direct, and participate in the shows for the season while the backstage students set the stage, cue the lights, and make sure each show runs on a professional standard.
The Theatre Program is also a regular participant in the MTC's Master Playwright Festival.
The auditions for all shows are open to the university public (with precedence given to the acting pool at the theatre program). Shows have historically been cast with alumni, upper level students and students enrolled in the Introduction to Theatre (THTR 1200) class.
The Theatre Program provides members with a uniquely comprehensive and professional experience and aims to ensure that audience members engage with interesting, provocative, student-lead theatre.
Historically we produced under the name Black Hole Theatre Company. Our alumni still refer to themselves lovingly as Black Holers and a theatre student group has taken control of the name.
